Bronze Penguin
gets lots of love
It was a thrilling day for both
artist and art when one of my
pieces was donated to the
Sacramento Zoo by the
Michael Gill family from Elk
Grove, CA.
The piece, named "Dedication"
by Zoo officials, was installed
outdoors between two
benches near the temporary
penguin exhibit.
Darby, zoo Director Mary
Healy, "Dedication" and Zoo
board member Terry Kastanis.
The piece was cast and finished
at
Frostad Atelier, a
woman-owned foundry located
at McClellan Air Force Business
Park.
Immediately after the piece was
unveiled and photos taken,
scores of children gathered
around the child-friendly piece
and petted his head and gave
him hugs.
This is exactly what donor
Michael Gill, the father of two
young boys wanted to see.
"This is perfect, to see children
interacting with art," he said.
"It's one thing that drew me to
the piece and I am pleased to
see this happening."

The Sacramento zoo and I are
most grateful to Michael Gill for
his generous donation.  Michael
is an accomplished digital artist
- a painter whose works are
extremely masterful. He is a
member of the Elk Grove Arts
Commission.

Discovering the Depths of Glass
Rene' is creating a new series of complex and demanding pieces
from the Deep Blue Sea. The tropical fish gleam
Graceful, colorful and beautiful, this fish is both hand blown and
sculpted and is part of Rene's new Deep Blue Sea collection.  See
Rene' Glass pages for more photos.
Glass blowing requires keeping the glass at exacting
temperatures and in constant motion. The fish and corals that
accompany these pieces are singular gems and no two pieces will
ever be exactly alike.

Rene' has combined two skills to produce this new series. The
glass is blown, but it is also sculpted, pulled and manipulated
into shape. All this happens while being constantly aware of the
temperature and handling of the blow pipe.

Look for an oceanic landscape soon on bronzeandglass.com as
Rene' explores the depths of glass blowing and experiments
with new colors, techniques and ideas.

manipulate the glass into the
proper shape while
integrating color in just the
right places.
Rene demonstrated glass
blowing at Sacramento's
Second Saturday Art
Walk. Working with two
assistants, he captivated
crowds for five hours of
dramatic glass work that
educated people about
the process of glass
blowing. He plans more
public demonstrations in
the future with his unique
mobile studio.
Amgen Tour Inspires
Glass Art Bicycle

Rene created a fill-sized bicycle
of glass to honor the start of
the 2009 Amgen Tour in
Sacramento. He met the
considerable challenge of
creating perfect circles and the
reproduction of a working bike
using engineering intuition and
his Horse-Cow Partners to build
a crystal clear glass bike that,
once plugged into power,
actually works! The wheels
slowly spin as do the pedals.
The bending and assembly of
this unique bicycle demonstrate
the  flexibility and creativity of
glass blowing in the 21st
century!
This fabulous and one-of-a kind glass creation will be for sale! It's mounted on molded an aluminum
frame that sets off the clear glass and features the accuracy and beauty of the classic bicycle. Rene' has
close-up experience with bicycles and they've been a lifelong love. His first job - at the age of 12 - was
in a bike shop, doing cleaning and repairs. He raced dirt bikes competitively as a teenager and frightened
his mother to death. This glass homage to bicycles and racing is completely unique and comes from the
heart!
